The Berkeley High School (BHS) Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to award financial assistance to deserving college-bound BHS seniors and to honor the memory of deceased BHS students, faculty, and staff.
E. Spencer Scott (’87), Douglas N. Stewart (’88), Ashley S. Scott (’91) and Ryan E. Stewart (’91) are the memorial scholarship fund’s founders. The four alumni believed that helping BHS graduates to pursue higher academic goals would be a great way to give back to their community. They originally formed the fund to pay tribute to the memory of a beloved classmate, John “Big Sump” Sumpter (’91), who unexpectedly passed away in March of 2014, but then expanded the scholarship to commemorate the lives of all members of the BHS family.
There will be community fundraising events for the BHS Memorial Scholarship Fund, including a Ribs, Rock, Reggae Festival in June 2015 and another event during BHS Homecoming 2015. These events will lead up to the annual BHS Memorial Kickball Tournament, the fund’s largest fundraising effort, with the inaugural event planned to be held in the spring of 2016. The entire community is invited to participate. Alumni are strongly encouraged to form teams to represent their graduating classes for “bragging rights”. Proceeds from the team registration fees will go directly to the scholarship fund. A banner with the names of deceased BHS students, faculty, and staff will be hung during the tournament.
A committee has been formed to organize and execute the fundraisers, but more volunteers are still needed. Persons interested in volunteering and / or those needing additional information should contact Event Chair Dionne Simmons (’90) at dsimmons@bhmsfund.org.
Please also contact Dionne as soon as possible to inform her of any names of deceased members of the BHS family so that they are included on the banner.
